Bakers Cyst
Popliteal cyst or baker’s cyst is a very common knee condition where there is fluid that comes from swelling in the knee joint that accumulates in the back of the knee. Many people complain of pressure in the posterior knee and frequently this turns to pain. The fluid can get better and worse but once it has developed it frequently doesn’t just go away completely on its own. The condition often develops because the balloon around the joint known as the capsule becomes inflamed. This inflamed capsule is called synovitis and will usually return again and again due to arthritis in the joint. Treatment for this including draining the fluid can provide relief but even with a steroid added to the procedure it rarely provides long term permanent resolution to the condition. Other treatments exist that can provide much longer resolution but they are not as well known. These treatments have as much if not more evidence than the steroid and have been compared to the steroid in research and been found to have better results but they still are not regularly used. Treatments such as prolotherapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP), and ozone therapy all provide good relief to this condition and if an appropriate number of treatments are provided can resolve this condition for multiple years.
