Knee Instability
Those who suffer from knee joint instability frequently have this condition for many years. Most of them don’t know that there is a great non-surgical treatment. The knee can be unstable in different locations including the kneecap or the large femur tibial knee joint and even in the fibula tibia joint. All of these can be treated but some take more time than others. It is the ligaments that surround our joints that provide the most stability. There are other tissues that help provide stability like fascia and muscles/tendons but with true instability it is usually a ligament that is injured.
The ligaments of the body are not the same in all people. Some have ligaments with more dense and rigid collagen that is very durable and can take more stress without injury. Some have ligaments with more elastin that are more flexible but are not able to tolerate as much stress or even light stress for as long. Those with ligaments that are more flexible will frequently get ligament strain that is like a rubber band that has been stretched too many times. The joint becomes weak and unstable. The longer this goes on the more arthritis that develops in the joint as well. Treating joint instability of the knee frequently requires tendon treatment as well. Treating the tendons that are a support for the joint and the ligament structures that are a support for the joint allow for improved mechanics and pain. The improved mechanics will allow strengthening to make sports or just activities of daily living feel possible again. Healing ligament strain and tear takes time and depending on which treatments sometime multiple treatments but with patience and appropriate care surgery can be avoided in most knee instability patients.
