Kneecap (Patella) Pain
Knee cap pain also known as patellofemoral syndrome is pain that is behind the knee cap. This is a very common problem that many people don’t even know that they have. This usually is felt as a sharp pain when going down a hill or stairs or when standing up from squat or crouched position. Some people even have buckling of the knee, it almost feels like the whole knee joint gives out. The reason for this pain and buckling is that the knee cap needs to glide between the femoral groove at the femur bone. If the knee cap is not “on track” it will grind against the bone inappropriately making it hurt and if it gets so much pressure that the body forces the muscle to stop pulling it will feel like it gives out. Usually it will come back on track and the giving out sensation or pain is mostly gone. Pain can persist however and leave an ache that is under the knee cap in the front of the knee for a few hours. This condition is treated well with physical therapy but sometimes that is not enough. Injection treatments can improve this pain and if it is found that weakness in the hip/pelvis or flat feet are causing some of the pain addressing these issues is important as well. For knee cap pain life can feel very unpredictable and we convince ourselves that it is okay and often just keep going while ignoring the issue. This will lead to greater injury in the long term however and early treatment is better than waiting until the pain is greater and unable to be tolerated. Often times traditional medical approach of steroid injections provide short term benefits but don’t fix the underlying cause. Come to The Road Back to Health clinic and find out what can be done to resolve this problem and not just provide short term pain relief with long term injury.
